This past weekend I had a scriptwriting class and I LOVED IT! I've never considered myself a scriptwriter, because I usually just rearrange a script so all of my students have lines. However, today I was led through some scriptwriting exercises that really sparked my interest. I found I could easily write a scene based on the idea of a character, prop, or location. It was incredible! By the end of the class, I literally typed up three complete scenes for the beginning of a new show.
I guess I shouldn't be too surprised given my English/LA/Story-Telling background, but I've never tried it before! I was so pleased it went well. I'm particularly excited about an entire story I worked on as part of a small group. We were given a newspaper and told to pick a story we thought could become a new project. In just under an hour, we did two activities that had us create the story structure for the show, then we broke it up and each wrote our own portion of the full script before putting it back together. We all loved it and feel so passionately about it that we are continuing to work on it, hoping to use it somehow throughout the year.
I plan to continue practicing my scriptwriting craft and use the exercises our lecturer, Paul Jenkins, guided us through to help me create my own original script. I'm also really excited at the prospect of teaching a scriptwriting workshop back home. The activities were so fun and allowed me to be super creative, I think a lot of my Broadway Bootcampers would get a kick out of it!

P.S. THIS is where I had my scriptwriting class... amazing, right?!
